Anoestrus & Silent Heat in Dairy Cattle

When cows fail to show clear signs of heat — or do not cycle at all after calving — rebreeding is delayed, calving intervals lengthen and lifetime productivity falls.

Why heat detection matters

Timely breeding keeps calving intervals tight and herds productive. Every missed heat adds days open, so detecting heat accurately has a direct effect on fertility and profitability.

Anoestrus versus silent heat

Anoestrus means the cow is not cycling at all. Silent heat (sub-oestrus) means she is cycling, but the signs are too weak or brief to detect — both delay rebreeding for different reasons.

Common contributing factors

Negative energy balance and low body condition after calving, metabolic stress, poor nutrition and underlying disease can all suppress or mask cycling, especially in early lactation.

Frequently asked
Why is my cow not showing heat?
Causes range from poor body condition and metabolic stress to silent heat or underlying disease. A veterinary reproductive check helps identify the reason.
What is silent heat in cows?
Silent heat is when a cow is cycling but shows signs too weak to detect. Careful, frequent observation and veterinary advice improve detection.
