Frequently asked
- What is anestrus in dairy animals?
- Anestrus is a condition in which a cow or buffalo fails to exhibit heat (estrus) or ovulate within the expected period, leading to delayed breeding and reduced reproductive efficiency.
- What are the common causes of anestrus?
- Anestrus can result from poor nutrition, negative energy balance, mineral deficiencies (especially trace minerals), postpartum stress, ovarian inactivity, uterine infections, or hormonal imbalances.
- How is anestrus diagnosed in dairy animals?
- Diagnosis involves evaluating breeding history, observing estrus behavior, rectal palpation or ultrasonography of the ovaries and uterus, and assessing the animal's nutritional and health status.
- How is anestrus treated in dairy animals?
- Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include improving nutrition, correcting mineral deficiencies, managing uterine infections, and administering appropriate hormonal therapy under veterinary supervision.
- How can anestrus be prevented in dairy herds?
- Proper transition management, balanced nutrition, adequate mineral supplementation, maintenance of optimal body condition, timely treatment of postpartum disorders, and regular reproductive monitoring help reduce the incidence of anestrus.
