What causes milk fever in cattle?
Milk fever, also known as hypocalcaemia, is a metabolic disorder that occurs when a cow's blood calcium level drops rapidly around calving. It occurs because the sudden demand for calcium for colostrum and milk production exceeds the cow's ability to mobilize calcium from bones and absorb it from the intestine.
What are the early signs of milk fever?
The early signs of milk fever include reduced appetite, muscle tremors, weakness, cold ears, reduced rumination, an unsteady or staggering gait, and difficulty standing. Early recognition and timely intervention are important to prevent the condition from progressing to recumbency and other serious complications.
Why is calcium important for fresh cow recovery after calving?
Calcium plays a vital role in muscle contraction, nerve function, rumen motility, and uterine contractions. Adequate calcium levels support feed intake, mobility, and a smoother recovery during the critical post-calving period and prevent conditions like ROP, Ketosis, Displaced abomasum, mastitis, and metritis
Is every dairy cow equally susceptible to milk fever?
No. Older, high-producing, and previously affected cows are generally at greater risk than first-lactation animals.
Can a cow develop hypocalcaemia even if enough calcium is provided?
Yes. If magnesium levels are inadequate, the cow's ability to mobilize and utilize calcium is impaired. Magnesium is essential for the proper function of parathyroid hormone (PTH), the hormone that regulates blood calcium. When calcium levels drop around calving, PTH helps release calcium from bones and increases its absorption and retention in the body. If magnesium is deficient, PTH cannot work effectively, making it difficult for the cow to maintain normal blood calcium levels—even if calcium is supplemented.
Can calcium supplementation help maintain lactation persistency?
Adequate calcium during the transition period supports normal muscle function, feed intake, rumen activity, and overall metabolic health. A healthy start to lactation helps cows achieve their production potential and maintain consistent performance throughout early lactation, especially in high-risk animals.
